Improving the standard of care with brachytherapy

Thanks to donor support, brachytherapy is revolutionizing radiation treatment and saving lives, like Bob Charron’s.

When Bob retired at 58, after a 35-year career in the RCMP, he had big plans for the next chapter in his life. Unfortunately, only a few months later, his plans were stopped in their tracks - Bob was diagnosed with Stage 2B prostate cancer.

His oncologist at BC Cancer – Kelowna quickly identified that he was a prime candidate for an innovative treatment called brachytherapy.

The treatment worked quickly and his tests showed a dramatic response.

“I’m living proof that innovations in cancer research and care can save lives,” says Bob. With brachytherapy, radioactive seeds are implanted directly into a tumour in a single session, delivering more radiation safely, in less sessions, while protecting the surrounding tissue. BC Cancer Foundation donors have played a major role in the latest innovations into brachytherapy and its impact on British Columbians facing cancer.
